I performed all the steps described and now I have a back-to-basic WHS server without all that junk software – media collector, twonky and other programs that never worked anyway. My Event Log is no longer filled with red errors and warnings and I am no longer forced to reboot the server every other day.

The only thing I miss are those pretty LED strips (they all go out when uninstalling the HP software), and also the health light, which also goes black. Other than that, I am pleased. Thank you!

Are chat messages displaying for anyone else in subsonic? I post a msg through external ip but can only view them when connecting though internal lan (http://server:port).

Hi there, I have implemented your reverse proxy solution, but I am seeing an issue where if the remote site has javascript in the links it does not work after going through the proxy.

Hello loonydeluxe,

authentication is currently not supported. Cookies should get passed through, but they may be bound to the remote server URL, and so the proxy website may not get access to them or something like that.

I will have to look into both of those issues

Hi,

i have just tried out the rev proxy on my IIS 6.0 box in a virtual directory.

Content for “anonymous” users works like a charm, but I have some problems when a user should authenticate:

- authentication: if the remote website (JDownload web interface, Virtual Server 2005 Webinterface) uses basic authentication I do not get an authentication dialogue but I receive a HTTP 401 error using anonymous iusr_, integrated authentication or standard authentication for the virtual directory (and a domain admin account for the app pool).

- cookies: PHPMyAdmin uses cookies for authentication. When logging in I get a message that cookies have to be enabled. When connecting to the interface without reverse proxy I can login to PHPMyAdmin.

Do you have a suggestion how to get these things working?

You are right, the proxy is currently not preserving the content type HTTP header from the remote server, which causes the ‘charset’ parameter – if it is present – to be stripped from the response. Your browser then does not recognize the character set and therefore displays the question marks.

I’ll see if I can write up a fix soon.

Hi
I installed the reverse Proxy today, so i can reach an intranet Server running Apache on the Web with Windows Authentication in front. Works good so far, only problem I have now, that the page on the apache is in german and special characters are broken, showing only a “?” sign. Any Suggestions ?

Hi. I just run into your blog and this article solved my problem! I am a newbie to all COM + QuickTime + C#, and am using x64 machine. I got “class not registerd” error all the time, almost give up to develop a software… I just switched to x86 and it worked!

This is an excellent tool. I’m a .NET developer and I had no idea you could do this kind of thing so easily. Well done

I’m using this successfully on IIS7 with Subsonic (installed with the normal Windows installer, running on port 90) with just a few modifications:

1) Remove the system.web/httpHandlers section from web.config, and replace with an entry in system.webServer/handlers. E.g.:

2) Adding a wildcard mapping to the aspnet_isapi.dll is not required in IIS7 thanks to the improved architecture of IIS.

3) In order to proxy the .m3u playlist files generated by Subsonic when using the External players, you need to add ‘audio/x-mpegurl’ as an additional content type to filter.

That was all I had to do to get this working on IIS7 with Subsonic 4.0.1, and so far it’s been flawless.

A Very BIG thank you for sharing this! My WHS doubles as both my family’s home server AND my ColdFusion web development server. After a crash and not being to recover my database files, I rethought my setup so my mySQL files are now replicating in the shares directory (rather than not being backed up on the limited space on the C drive) and I can now set my IIS directories in the shares and replicate them as well (I wasn’t able to do this before because of the permissions being reset every time the server rebooted).

Without additional details it will be difficult to identify the problem, and the solution will likely be specific to your web application.

A few things to look into: make sure that you configured ReverseContentTypes correctly. It is possible that your web site is sending a content type that is currently not enabled for URL reversal. You can enable the event log to see which content type is returned for every individual file. If mod_proxy works, then your site probably doesn’t use any fancy JavaScript to generate image URLs, but it might still be worthwhile to check out the setting for ReverseBasePrefixes. It may also be possible that your web site is using a content encoding that is currently not supported.

If you can email me a link to your website or provide excerpts from the event log, then I might be able to help you better.

I have a problem which might be so obvious to someone since it consistently failing in 2 IIS 6 Web Server I tried.

I don’t seem to be able to make images come through the reverse proxy.

mod_proxy worked for me but I can not use this n this environment.

I tried also ManagedFusion Url Rewriter with similar results.

Can you point me to something that I am not doing or not doing correctly? Do you have ANY idea what i might be missing?
